Purple Canopy (Short Story) Chapter One

Chapter One

I

t was an awkwardly cold summer day in the inner city of New Jersey. For some reason it just     with her present mood. Jason started to act different every since he left for college on a football scholarship. She just felt like her budding high school relationship with so much potential was slowly come to an end. Unlike him she wasn’t popular or from a well to do family they were what many called opposites that attracted.

“Still thinking about that nigga huh?”  Diana said peeking her head through the silky lace drapes at Shana who laid on her stomach writing in her diary. Diana shook her head as she slide in the bed next to her sister.

“Shany you’re 19 going on 20 you have to understand that somethings change when we grow up, Jay been at Howard for 2 whole years going on 3 If it isn’t getting better….” Diana started to caress Ashana’s her although they were 2 years apart. Ashana was like her daughter. It’s not that their mother was a dead beat but between 3 jobs and her fiancé you could basically say that the girl’s had everything they wanted material wise but they would’ve traded it all in just to have a week of motherly love.

“I know Dia, Jason isn’t like that I’m sure his ass is just busy that’s all” Ashana said in a whisper even though she herself started to no longer believe the excuses she was making up for him. No one was that busy that they couldn’t even pick up the phone for the girl they claimed to have been in love with since they were 14,and those “I’m working hard so we could have a better life” speeches he feed her when he does contact her started to taste more and more like bullshit on her taste buds.

“I know Shany, but just because he isn’t here doesn’t mean you shouldn’t live. You have to go out there and make him sweat a little. Ju Ju is having a cookout this weekend and your ass is going.” Diana slipped out of bed before Ashana could reject the invite.

Damn that bitch can move fast when she wants to” Ashana thought as she rolled over and started twisting her fingers in the violet lace that hung over her bed. She remembered the time when her mother didn’t have to work so much. Seemed like the day their father got life for first degree murder they lost both parents at one time. No one ever let them forget that street royalty ran through their veins many seemed disappointed that neither sister decided to follow daddy’s foot steps.

Child one day your going to met a man that’s going the change everything you have ever thought about your life” Ashana jumped out of her sleep it has been awhile since she dreamt about her Grandma Daisy . Many people don’t believe in foreteller’s but anyone who has ever heard the stories from older people in the deep rooted south quickly changed their minds. Grandma Daisy was one of those Louisianan bayou women who knew more about the supernatural then anyone. Some people called her a witch rumor had it that she came from a long line of priestess but sweet old Daisy was just a woman who knew what she was talking about. When say said something it happened and it baffled Ashana. Why was she dreaming about this now so many years later.

“Shany”! Ju Ju yelled outside her door before busting in and pulling the cover off of her.

“Damn, I forgot your ass slept naked, get up and get dressed we going shopping for tonight” Jucinta was one of those best friend’s. You know the type that would drag you outside on your worst days just because she isn’t going to let you died in your own feelings.

The mall was packed from corner to corner with people you could tell only came for the free air conditioning. Ju Ju pulled Ashana’s hand as she busted through groups of people.

“OUCH!” Ashana yelled as she clenched over holding her stomach. Her toasted caramel complexion started turning a bright apple red as she started breathing rapidly. Causing more attention then she wanted to bring to herself. Jucinta stopped and looked at her best friend with a blank expression.

“It’s been awhile since that happened, what’s bring it on now” Jucinta knew what was happening. It was the same thing that happened before her brother got killed and the same thing that happened when she met the father of her two children.

“I don’t know first I have a dream about Daisy and now this” Ashana gasps for air as she tried to composed herself.

“You dreamt about Daisy what has it been like three years since that happened“ Jucinta said  pushing through more crowds to the food court.

Grabbing a couple of drinks the two young women sat down where no one could hear them.

“What did you see” Ju Ju said pulling out her flask pouring some vodka into both of their orange juice.

“I didn’t see anything that’s the weird part” Ashana said taking a long sip out of her straw.

Finally getting to Ju Ju’s town house, Ashana took a deep breath believing that what she felt had something to do with the amount of people around her. She took a quick shower as Ju Ju got the children ready to go away for the weekend. Everything was still very strange to her she was told that she had a gift as a child but tried to shake it because it went against everything she believed in. As she became older is seemed harder to ignore then one day it just stopped. For it to come back all of a sudden sent chills up her spine.

“Girl I need my bathroom the cookout starts and two hours” Ju Ju broke her deep thinking.

Ashana  slipped on a pair of basic black leggings with faux leather on both side over her thick thighs and a blinged out crop t-shirt over her busty figure she was the definition of thick and she loved all of her curves. Her curly black hair with golden tips rested at her mid-back. She lined her slanted brown eyes that seemed to be a mixture of gold and mahogany before painting her lips with a sheer gloss.

“It starting now” Ju Ju yelled at the door before spraying her signature perfume all over her body.

Rico stood at the grill with a can a beer in one hand. Staring at Jucinta as she walked out the house with Ashana by her said.

“Don’t make another baby tonight” Shana joked as she hugged Rico causing him to giggle and blush.

“Shany met my homies, Homies this the best friend Ju can’t stop blabbing about” Rico said to the group of guys that seemed take up all the space behind him.

Ashana went down the line shaking hands with the fellas when it happened she shook a hand that sent electricity up her arm. She shook it off trying not to be weird but his eyes gazed at hers as if he felt it too. They both became frozen and tongue tied….
