Jayson (Chapter One: The Rose Garden)

Chapter One

It wasn’t the Uhaul nor was it the 18 hour drive but the smell of fresh tobacco growing in the fields and the sound of cows mooing that made Azania realize that it was actually happening. She thought she was prepared mentally, emotionally, and physically for this but was she saddened by the realization that life as she had known it was now states away from her.

The life that she had become so accustom to and with all the trails she had to overcome just so she could be comfortable. She was conflicted by the thoughts that she had to start all over again.

“ Don’t tell me your ass is already catching feelings about leaving ” Sina said looking over at the passenger side as Azania gazed out the car window.

Sina being the oldest sister had been planning to leave the hood for the past few years but her financial state never made it possible. Both, She and Azania were products of a crack head mother and father. Growing up neither of them knew it wasn’t normal for a grown man to feel up on them so their momma could get her fix or she I say medicine. The years of growing up to fast started to finally take it’s toll but Sina sacrificed herself for her sister and moving to West Bubble Fuck, North Carolina was more of her running away.

“Catching feeling about leaving where? Bitch, Please”! Azania said knowing that in the back of her mind she couldn’t stop thinking about New Jersey.

Marion danced in her head from the moment she told him she was leaving. For the first time in the whole charade they called a relationship he actually showed some emotion. Although, she went through so much hell with him and deep down she really wanted it to work. Despite, the babies he had on her and public humiliation of staying in the position of being the side chick as he made it official with woman after woman. It was something special about his presence that made her naïve to his deceit and she just wanted to feel that presence for the long haul.

The Black Cadillac turned into the long Greystone marbled drive way that lead up to a doubled black bared gate with the letter “W” engraved in old Victorian cursive. The sister couldn’t keep from looking at one another as they cruised through what was left to them by their grandmother on their father’s side. A house finally appeared through the evergreen trees and rose bushes that decorated the edges of the perimeter. The house looked like it had a lot of history tied to it and despite being vacant for the past 10 year the bushes were trimmed, walk way was swept, and the roses. The roses were in full bloom and glossed as if they were crystalized.

“These roses are beautiful, strange thing is we are in the middle of fall, shouldn’t they be died by now”! Sina exclaimed before looking puzzled.

Her phone rung for the fiftieth time that day. Causing Azania to look at her placing her hands on her wide hips. Sina quickly popped open the trunk removing suit-case after suit-case. She was trying to conceal the fact that she was a nervous wreck. Just knowing that Uche was looking for her even if he was on the stoop somewhere in Brooklyn. For years she had been involved in what seemed like the prefect union between two people on the surface. Being with Uche was her hell here on earth and sometimes she felt as if he was Satan himself. Azania focused her attention from her sister knowing that in due time she would figure out what made such an upbeat person suddenly so timid. She started following the trail that lead to the rear side of the mini-mansion.  She could almost in vision the mulatto little girl that was once her grandmother playing on that trail with her sisters. In some strange way for the first time in her life she felt like she was at home. The backyard patio stretched out to what seemed to be a little oasis surrounded by trees and more roses. Leaving the tell-tell sign that it was once filled with party guest often as she remembered the rumors of their great-grandfather being the town’s infamous bootlegger.  Azania was always the inquisitive sister out of the two and her eyes couldn’t  lose focus of the metal bar gate that the beautiful evergreens hid except for one small section. It was in her nature to enter places she shouldn’t and before she could even think of it being hidden for a reason she was pulling at the gate.

Damn it, it’s locked” She thought being slightly fascinated by the thought that there was a secret passage way in her own backyard.

“Zania” ! Sina yelled running towards the back of the house like she had just seen a ghost.

Sina stood almost pale and shaking, peering out into the garden not being able to embrace the beauty of what she was looking at.

“Zania”! She yelled again this time walking off the patio trembling. What she had just laid her eyes on made her fear that something got to her baby sister.

Azania ran out the garden smiling then stopping as Sina threw her arms around her as if she thought she would never see her again.

“Bitch, what the fuck is wrong with you” Azaina yelled as her sister started to sob on her shoulder.

“I just saw some guy standing in our window” She exclaimed breaking away from Zania.

“You just saw what” Azania asked in a chuckle. Although she herself was a little frighten. Knowing that Sina had a way of being overly dramatic when she had someone freaking out a long with her made her play it off.

“Sina, you just need some sleep after all it has been a long way here and you have to be tired. I’m more then positive no one is in there.”

She knew it was the wrong time to mention the secret gate in the garden or even the fact that she was sense a presence of something. Something that seemed to have been welcoming them there since they arrived.
